Beth Accomando Is Sweet on Pam (Part 2)

Guest post by Beth Accomando. Check out Cinema Junkie, her awesome blog and podcast here!

Day 3: Friday Foster (1975)

“Her name is Friday but you can dig her any day of the week.”

Grier plays a photographer who snaps a pic of an attempted assassination and then the killers come after her.

This film not only has Grier in top form but it’s also got Apollo Creed, genuine African royalty, Cat Woman, the Watermelon Man, Mr. Howell, a Starfleet captain, Isaac from The Love Boat and a man with the shining! What’s not to love here?

Yaphet Kotto plays her main squeeze but she also gets to sleep with whomever she wants and no one makes a fuss or complains because she’s Friday Foster and she does what she damn well pleases.

There were so many things that I could use for a themed dessert: photography, a mysterious Black Widow, a gay bar where you find Godfrey Cambridge has a “yen for men,” a high fashion show highlighting the four seasons, both New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, and Friday steals a milk truck and a hearse! Any of those could have served as inspiration but I went with some sugar and spice cookies that have black pepper and coffee (or Coffy) because Friday can be oh so sweet and keep you up all night but she can also burn you with some pepper spray like she does to Carl Weathers. Then you need to take a break from your beer and sip a Kalahari Sunrise in honor of Friday’s best friend who gets cut to the quick while modeling Madame Rena’s purple Kalahari Sunrise haute couture. Since the dress was purple I used a blueberry rather than raspberry slurry in the cocktail along with mango and vodka.

This may also be the only film that demands beer from Matt!

Day 4: Foxy Brown (1974)

“Foxy is in town, so gather round and watch a real shake down. Cause she's got drive and that ain't jive. She don't bother to bring 'em back alive.

Don't mess aroun' with Foxy Brown

She's brown sugar and spice but if you don't treat her nice she'll put you on ice!

A chick with drive who don't take no jive!

Don't mess aroun' with Foxy Brown Don't mess aroun' with Foxy Brown - She's the meanest chick in town!”

They really don’t write taglines like that any more.

Foxy Brown, along with Coffy, are my two favorite Pam Grier films. In this one she is hellbent for revenge after her boyfriend is murdered by members of a drug syndicate. The highlight of the film – spoiler alert – is when she faces off against the final villains and surprises them by pulling a gun out of her amazing, powerful Afro! In honor of that iconic scene I made some brown sugar and spice cookies in the shape of a gun that you can stash in your ‘fro for a snack whenever you want.
